The
Diploma in Biotechnology (Research and Management) will normally be taken over
two years part-time concurrently with a bachelors degree. The equivalent
full-time load for this course is 48 points.
This course is designed for students enrolled concurrently in a bachelors
degree who wish to undertake a third major in biotechnology (in addition to the
majors allowed in their degree course) to prepare them especially well for a
career in research or management. A combination of credit transfer (up to 24
points), overload and summer subjects allows students to complete the diploma
at the same time as their bachelors degree or within an extra semester
depending on the time of entry to the course.
The course structure is identical to the new major sequence in biotechnology to
be introduced as part of the BSc program in 2001. The regulations of the
Faculty of Science currently allow students to overload their semester subject
enrolment by six points without special approval (second and third-year
students only). Students from other faculties wishing to enrol in this course
are required to seek prior approval from the faculty administering their degree
course.
The undergraduate Diploma of Biotechnology (Research and Management) is
equivalent to a major sequence, ie 48 credit points in total, and includes 24
credit points of core subjects split equally over second and third-year levels
and 24 points of electives. At least 12 points of elective study must be
selected from third-year-level subjects in List A (as outlined in detail in the
biotechnology entry under ´Disciplines and sequences offered').
The structure of this course does not include first-year-level subjects but
allows entry to students who have achieved at least a distinction grade in one
of the following subjects: BIO1022, CHM1022, BMS1011, BIO1626 or CHM1639.
