Non-arts subjects available within the BA

A major can normally be studied from a faculty other than Arts. The faculties offering subjects of interest to arts students include Art and Design, Business and Economics, Information Technology, Education, Law, Science and Medicine. Students should refer to individual faculty sections in this handbook to obtain detailed information on the choices available and consult with the particular faculty office regarding issues to do with subject prerequisites and subject quotas.
The Faculty of Arts offers double-degree programs with most other faculties of the university. These degrees are of particular interest to students who wish to pursue disciplines from different faculties.

Faculty of Art and Design

Painting and drawing

Studio arts subjects may be taken in the Faculty of Art and Design -- subject to availability of places. Students in the Faculty of Arts must gain permission from both the Department of Fine Arts, Caulfield campus (telephone (03) 9903 2815) or the Gippsland Centre for Art and Design, Gippsland campus (telephone (03) 9902 6261), and the Arts faculty office before enrolment to be able to use these subjects as part of the free points that students may take towards the BA degree. Consecutive studies are offered in both semesters, their content complementing aspects of first-year subjects in visual arts. These subjects cannot be taken in combination with music performance studies and students should be aware that they will be responsible for the purchase of art materials. The subjects depend on studio participation and students are required to attend all classes, and visits to a number of exhibitions may be recommended.
Students at the Gippsland campus are advised to contact the administrative officer at the Gippsland Centre for Art and Design (telephone (03) 9902 6261) for further information of elective subjects available in 2001.
First-year subjects are available in the areas of painting/drawing (Caulfield and Gippsland), printmaking (Gippsland), sculpture (Gippsland) and photomedia (Gippsland).

Some subjects have no prerequisite requirement of previous studies in mathematics at VCE level.
Students may take a major or a minor sequence in mathematics; the minor sequence meets the minimum requirement under the state education system to qualify as a high-school mathematics teacher. Details of subjects are provided under the Department of Mathematics and Statistics entry in the Science faculty section.
