The PhD and MSc programs offered by the Department of Psychology involve a
research project supervised by a member of staff and regular attendance at and
participation in seminar programs. Current areas of active interest and inquiry
in the department include sensory processes and perception, cognitive
processes, neuropsychology, behavioural neuroscience, attentional and movement
disorders, physiological substrates and correlates of behaviour, biochemistry
of memory, attention and working memory, sound localisation, circadian rhythms,
sleep psycholinguistics, word recognition and reading acquisition, human
information processing and performance, human factors, analysis of human skill,
road user behaviour, human-animal interactions, developmental psychology,
gender issues, health psychology; vocational psychology, counselling, social
psychology; play and aggression in children, child development, occupational,
industrial, personnel and organisational psychology cross-cultural psychology,
forensic psychology, effects of drugs on behaviour, psychology of aging, stress
management. Graduates interested in pursuing research (in these or related
areas of interdisciplinary studies involving human or animal behaviour towards
a higher degree) should consult the postgraduate studies officer, Department of
Psychology.
Prospective research students should also refer to information on the Doctor of
Psychology. This program is offered in clinical psychology, clinical
neuropsychology and organisational psychology. The program includes a major
research thesis, coursework and supervised practica.
