The Graduate Certificate of Nursing (Gerontics) has been specifically designed
to assist registered nurses in the practice of caring for older clients across
a broad variety of clinical settings. The course also assists registered nurses
who wish to research and further understand the phenomenon of the ageing
process and health potential and deficits commonly associated with ageing.
To be eligible for admission, an applicant would normally have relevant registration (eg Division 1 with the Nurses Board of Victoria), at least one year of nursing experience, and a degree in nursing or a related discipline. Experience in the relevant area of practice is desirable.
The course consists of four subjects, which will normally be completed over a period of one year. The course is offered by distance education only or by flexible mode (ie a combination of on-campus and distance education teaching methods). Successful completion of the course requires the study of the following three core subjects and one elective subject.

Please note: To satisfy the requirements of subject assignments, it is expected that students will network with practitioners and agencies in the field of gerontic nursing. Students need to develop an understanding of all areas of aged care, and should negotiate with other facilities and agencies to spend at least one day in a variety of settings (eg nursing homes and hostels, ACAT team, community option/linkages packages, domiciliary care teams).
