Structure and organisation of the faculty

The Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences comprises the departments of Anaesthesia, Anatomy and Cell Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, General Practice, Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, Forensic Medicine, Medicine, Microbiology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Pathology and Immunology, Pharmacology, Physiology, Psychological Medicine, Radiography and Medical Imaging, and Surgery. In addition, the faculty has a School of Nursing, a Centre for Ambulance and Paramedic Studies and research centres including the Institute for Reproduction and Development, the Institute of Public Health and Health Services Research, the Centre for Early Human Development, the Centre for Heart and Chest Research, the Centre of Medical Informatics, the Centre for Population Health and Nutrition, the Centre for Rural Health, the Centre for Bioprocess Technology, and the National Centre for Coronial Information. The faculty also has strong links with research institutes such as the Baker Medical Research Institute (Alfred Hospital), The Prince Henry's Institute for Medical Research (Monash Medical Centre), the Mental Health Research Institute (Royal Park Hospital), and the Macfarlane Burnet Centre for Medical Research.
The academic operations of the faculty are governed by the faculty board. The dean is the chairperson of faculty board and has administrative responsibility for the faculty. Assistance with academic matters is provided by the associate deans and the deputy dean. Heads of departments and directors of centres and institutes provide academic leadership within their disciplines. Heads and directors, together with all other professors, play a significant role in the overall academic activities of the faculty.
