The Graduate Certificate of Education (Professional Development Studies) is a
flexible program offered to allow professional educators to upgrade their
qualifications.
This course is also offered to non-tertiary qualified applicants with
substantial professional experience who may use it as an entry to graduate and
postgraduate study. Such students will be required to achieve specified minimum
grade levels prior to their proceeding to graduate or postgraduate study.
Admission to this course will be open to applicants who possess a degree or diploma or who have equivalent professional/commercial experience and who are qualified educators or who have suitably acceptable experience in a related field.
The
Graduate Certificate of Education (Professional Development Studies) comprises
24 points of study. These are normally completed by the student undertaking
four six-credit point subjects.
This qualification is designed to be very flexible and will permit a wide range
of studies and activities in professional development to be drawn together,
including credit for non-award programs, workplace research, formal subjects of
study, and supervised independent study, as part of a ´recognition of
prior learning' program. There are several recommended pathways through this
course, and applicants can choose from the following:
1. A number of distance education and other subjects from the distance
education handbook, to make up a tailored selection of subjects totalling 24
points. The handbook is available from the Centre for Learning and Teaching
Support (CeLTS), Gippsland campus, freecall 1800 671 845.
2. A combination of distance education subjects plus a selection of
specially contracted subjects.
3. A combination of distance education and internal subjects.
4. A selection of internal subjects.
All subject choices will be contingent upon prerequisites which are stated in
the ´Subjects' section at the back of this handbook.
It should be noted that professional development pathways may be contracted by
educators in industry or professionals other than school teachers.
The course is equivalent to 24 credit points of study and is normally completed over one year of part-time study. Study modes will vary according to the needs of program components. The expected number of hours per week for a part-time student is 24.
