Master of Rural Health


General information

Aims

The course aims to prepare rural health care practitioners for positions of leadership in research, clinical practice, teaching and management. On completion, graduates will be able to provide high-quality health care specifically orientated to the health needs of the rural community.

Professional recognition

This course will help advance the career options of rural health care practitioners from various disciplines.

Entry requirements

Candidates are selected on the basis of academic and professional merit. Initial entry through the graduate diploma is required.

Special requirements

Access to personal computer facilities and email is essential. Residential attendance is not required.

Course structure

The Master of Rural Health comprises 72 credit points. The course has been structured as a coursework degree or as a coursework and minor thesis or clinical practice report award. Students undertaking the coursework masters must complete four core units and eight elective units. Students undertaking the coursework and minor thesis or clinical practice report degree must complete four core units, two electives, a 12-point research/reflective practice unit and a 24-point minor thesis or project.

Core units as for Graduate Diploma in Rural Health

Year 2

Coursework masters:

Four elective units

Coursework and minor thesis masters:

One elective, plus 12-point research unit OR reflective practice unit (core units)

Year 3

Coursework masters:

Four elective units

Coursework and minor thesis masters:

One elective, plus minor thesis/project

Year 4

Minor thesis/project

Credits/exemptions

A maximum of 25 per cent or 18 credit points may be granted on the basis of equivalent graduate study, a fellowship of any of the clinical medical colleges, or advanced formal qualification in other health disciplines. Candidates who have completed the Graduate Diploma in Rural Health within the past seven years can gain full credit towards the Master of Rural Health (Professional). However, Master of Rural Health candidates who have completed a Graduate Diploma in Rural Health will need to complete the 12-point advanced research/reflective practice unit and the minor thesis/project.
