Graduate Certificate in Health Informatics

Objectives

The Graduate Certificate in Health Informatics is designed to educate health care professionals to be effective developers, users and managers of health information resources. Since health information is increasingly being processed by computers and transmitted by communications technology, the course provides an understanding of the nature of information systems and the appropriate use of technology. Students will learn to identify what data and information is needed by doctors, nurses, hospital administrators, government planners and other health care professionals and how it is used to make effective health care decisions.

The objectives of the course are to provide graduates with:

Admission requirements

The normal requirement for admission is a three-year degree or a diploma with a major in a health-related area. Consideration will also be given to applicants with substantial and professionally relevant qualifications and experience, and who are currently employed in a senior position in a health-related area.

Course structure

The certificate is a one-year, part-time course delivered using the world wide web in a flexible delivery mode utilising network and internet technologies. Students will be required to attend two weekends per semester for workshops and seminars on the Peninsula campus. The course consists of four semester-length units.

Students may also complete the course over two years, with one unit per semester.

Completed applications

Completed applications are to be forwarded to Ms Cheryl Ely, School of Network Computing, McMahons Road, Frankston, Victoria 3199, by 22 September 2000 to be considered for a first-round offer. Applications received after that date, but before 24 November 2000, will be considered for a second round of offers. Later applications may be considered if places are available.
