This course aims to provide a course of study for transport and traffic professionals wishing to expand their skills in areas of relevance to the planning, design, management and operation of transport and traffic facilities to meet their own personal and professional needs as well as the needs of their clients and the community at large. Graduates are able to bring together knowledge from the many disciplines involved in transport and to communicate effectively with other people in the industry and wider community.
The course satisfies the continuing education requirements of the Institution of Engineers, Australia.
Participants
will have an undergraduate degree in civil engineering or equivalent. At most,
20 per cent of the students accepted into the program will not have a first
degree. For students without a degree, the minimum requirement would be six
years of documented high-level technical experience, or an associate diploma
and three years of high-level technical experience. For students who do not
have a degree, there are two entry paths into the graduate certificate:
1. Complete two graduate units (12 credit points) on a not-for-degree
basis, and achieve at least a 65 per cent average.
2. Complete one graduate unit (6 credit points) on a not-for-degree
basis and complete an entry exam, based on the material covered in an industry
program (a non-award program, for example the Transport Management Course in
Bus and Coach Operations or the Education Program in Parking Management). This
exam would test the understanding of the material and its application at an
advanced level appropriate for entry to a postgraduate program. The student
would need to achieve at least a 65 per cent result in the entry exam (which
would be equated to six credit points towards a postgraduate degree) and at
least 65 per cent in the further six-credit-point unit from the postgraduate
program (taken on a not-for-degree basis) in order to be able to articulate
into the graduate certificate.
The course is normally completed in one year by distance education (based on two units per semester) with a maximum of two years part-time (based on one unit per semester).
The course will be conducted by distance education part-time over two semesters or one year. It may be accelerated to a six-month, full-time course. The course is therefore equivalent to 0.5 EFTSU or 24 credit points. Students are allowed a maximum period of two years to complete the course with a maximum deferral period of 12 months.

Distance education material in the form of study guides and CD-ROMs are currently being developed and will be made available to all students. Prescribed textbooks will be available from the university bookshop. Students will require access to a computer with email and internet access, either at home or via commercial access points or facilities at local libraries etc.
