The Graduate Diploma in Accounting is primarily for persons with non-accounting degree qualifications occupying management positions in industry or government bodies. The aim of the course is to enable students to broaden their business knowledge and increase understanding of accounting-related matters.
Successful completion of the course will satisfy the tertiary requirements for admission as an associate of the Australian Society of Certified Practising Accountants (ASCPA). To achieve CPA status, graduates would need to complete the society's CPA program and an experience requirement. Graduates also satisfy the tertiary requirements for admission to the Australian Institute of Chartered Accountants. Membership of the Institute may be applied for following successful completion of the Graduate Diploma in Accounting, the institute's Professional Year program, and an experience requirement.

Previous academic achievement and work experience with supporting documentation will be considered in the assessment of successful applicants. Applicants should note that there are two intakes per year to this course, one to commence in first semester, and the second to commence in second semester.
Access to an IBM-compatible computer is essential for the use of word-processing and other software packages.
Weekend schools are run three times each semester for many of the graduate subjects. Attendance is optional for those students wishing to attend.
The course is only offered by distance education. The course consists of twelve subjects normally taken over three or more years. Students may commence this course in either first semester or second semester.

Assessment is by a combination of assignments and final examination for each subject. Generally a pass is required in the final examination to pass the subject.
Applicants who have completed graduate-level subjects at a recognised tertiary institution, within the last five years, which are similar in content to a subject forming part of the course of study may apply for a credit exemption to a maximum of 50 per cent of the course.
