The Faculty of Information Technology refers, in the wider sense, to all
students enrolled in award courses offered by the faculty, and all staff
(academic, administrative, technical and clerical). The schools in the faculty
are the School of Business Systems, the School of Information Management and
Systems, the School of Computer Science and Software Engineering, the Gippsland
School of Computing and Information Technology and the Peninsula School of
Computing and Information Technology. The faculty offers award courses at the
new Monash University Malaysia campus. The faculty also operates the Pearcey
Centre for Computing, the Centre for Electronic Commerce, and the Centre for
Information Management and Systems Practice.
Legally, the faculty is a statutory body comprising all full-time members of
the teaching staff. The main business of the faculty is delegated to the
faculty board, a body of about thirty-nine members including all heads of
schools, other school-based representatives, representatives of other
faculties, the library, and representatives of graduates and students of the
faculty. The faculty board normally meets every six weeks from February to
December.
The board has standing committees that have the power to act on behalf of the
board when an immediate decision is required. These committees include the
Faculty Education Committee, which advises the board on matters relating to the
coursework degrees and diplomas offered by the faculty, including student
workload and assessment, admission and selection, and new course and subject
offerings; the Research Committee, which advises the board on matters relating
to the graduate research programs of the faculty, including admission,
selection, and maintenance of appropriate academic standards; and the Student
Progress and Exclusions Committee, which considers cases of students who become
liable for exclusion because of unsatisfactory academic performance.
The senior officers of the faculty are the dean (who is located on the Clayton
campus), the four associate deans (two located at Clayton and two located at
Caulfield), and the faculty manager (who is located on the Clayton campus).
The dean chairs meetings of the faculty, the faculty board and its committees
(in some instances the associate deans preside on behalf of the dean). The
faculty manager is responsible for providing secretariat services needed by the
faculty, and providing advice on policy, planning and reporting
requirements.
Any student wishing to see the dean, an associate dean or the faculty manager
is normally able to make an appointment on request. Inquiries should be
directed to the relevant faculty office.
Students wishing to bring any relevant matters to the attention of the student
members of the faculty board should contact the faculty office at Caulfield.
