The Faculty of Engineering offers a double-degree course combining the
Bachelor of Engineering with the Bachelor of Technology (Aerospace). The double
degree is only available to students in the Department of Mechanical
Engineering on the Clayton campus. The program is designed to allow students
with a strong interest in aerospace science and technology the chance to
undertake a course of study that combines this interest with the opportunities
offered by a mechanical engineering degree. Graduates will be able to work as
aerospace/aeronautical engineers, and in mechanical engineering careers. A
variety of aerospace science and technology opportunities exist in consulting,
research, manufacturing, design, transportation and mechanical handling.
The five-year course combines subjects from the four-year mechanical
engineering and three-year aerospace technology degrees. The final
qualification is a double degree in mechanical engineering and aerospace
technology, BE/BTech(Aerospace). The aerospace degree is fully integrated
within the program and cannot be taken separately. The first year of program,
apart from the subjects that are common to the Bachelor of Engineering degree,
introduces students to the history and theory of flight. In the second year,
students will take introductory subjects in mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid
mechanics and design. Students will also be introduced to specialist aerospace
topics in materials and structures. The third and fourth years of the program
build on the basic material already introduced. During these two years, topics
covered will include avionics, aerodynamics, flight mechanics and propulsion,
as well as mechanical engineering design including computer-aided design and
manufacturing. The final year of the program has a number of project-based
subjects as well as elective subjects that the student may select for themselves.
