Many
disciplines offer a masters degree entirely by coursework. All students must
complete 48 points of coursework subjects at fifth-year level in order to
qualify for the degree. In some cases, a research project of 12 or more points
may be undertaken. Students undertaking coursework degrees are not eligible to
apply for scholarships.
For students undertaking a Master of Arts, Master of Bioethics (1998 onwards)
or a Master of Social Work degree, the minimum pass is a credit 60 C. To
qualify for the degree, students must have achieved a credit or better in all
subjects. Students enrolled from 1998 onwards in the Master of Environmental
Science degree must obtain a credit in all core and foundation subjects (these
subjects are defined by a 'C' or 'F' in the subject code) and a credit average
over all.
The
minimum entry requirements for a coursework masters degree are a four-year
honours degree with a grade of H2B or above or an MQual with grades of credit
average or above or a graduate/postgraduate diploma with grades of credit
average in a relevant discipline. Some departments and centres may
require higher grades - refer to the individual program for details.

The Master of Bioethics and the Master of Social Work degrees are offered both
by distance education and on-campus. |
Prior to 1998, Master of Arts degrees by coursework and by coursework and
research were two-year programs (comprising part 1 and part 2). This structure
still applies to currently enrolled students who commenced the degree prior to
1998. Details are available in earlier handbooks.
The MBA/MA in Arts Administration is a new postgraduate double-degree program. Students start in the MBA component of the double degree, and after having completed 12 out of 16 subjects normally required for the MBA, they may transfer to the MA component, where they complete three out of the four subjects normally required for an MA. For further information, see under the heading 'Arts administration'.
