The honours degree of the Bachelor of Nursing


General information

Aims

This course provides future higher degree candidates with advanced studies in nursing and nursing research. Upon completion of the course students are expected to be able to clearly describe a broad range of research methodologies which may be used to investigate the discipline of nursing; demonstrate skills in undertaking research including planning, development and implementation of a research project under supervision; produce and present research work at a scholarly level; demonstrate an interest in pursuing higher degree studies in the discipline of nursing; and participate in research activities as part of their professional role.

Entry requirements

Applicants must have qualified for the Bachelor of Nursing with an average grade of credit or higher. In exceptional circumstances the head of school may recommend candidature to an applicant with a lesser result. In addition to completing the application for admission form, applicants must also complete a course administration form which is available from the course inquiries centre by telephoning 1800 671845.

Students are expected to access a personal computer consisting of the following accessories:

Course structure

The course is of two years part-time duration by multi-modal education. It consists of coursework and a supervised research project. Seventy-five percent of the course is devoted to nursing research. The coursework component is normally taken over one year of part-time study and consists of two nursing subjects and two research subjects, to be followed by the honours research project in the second year. Mode of delivery

A set of course materials will be provided to facilitate learning and communication. Students can complete their coursework through a range of activities including workshops, research conferences, seminars and lectures, electronic communication, video/audio communication and weekend residential schools. Regular weekly classes are not scheduled. Students negotiate and maintain their own regular contact strategy with the relevant subject coordinator.

Assessment

Assessment includes a combination of tasks such as essays, workshops, projects, examination, seminar presentation, research proposal and production of a research report.
