The Master of Pharmaceutical Science (MPharmSc) degree has replaced the
Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) degree by research that was instituted in the early
1970s. The main difference between the degrees is that, in the older degree,
the preliminary year of study was akin to the honours year with candidates
having to pass coursework subjects and demonstrate research skills of
satisfactory level before they could continue with further studies. Now that an
honours degree is a widely available option, entry into the MPharmSc degree in
general uses honours level studies as an entry point.
The Master of Pharmaceutical Science is open to students who have
(a) qualified for the degree of Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science
(Honours) of the university, (b) qualified in this or another university
for any other degree which in the opinion of the college board is suitable
preparation for the candidates' proposed field of study or
(c) qualification and experience which in the opinion of the college board
are a suitable preparation for the candidates' proposed field of study.
The notional duration for the degree of Master of Pharmaceutical Science is two
years. It is recognised that the time may be shortened if the candidate has
pursued an honours degree. For full-time candidates the thesis can be submitted
following not less than twelve and not more than thirty-six months of study.
Students are not precluded from nominating the area in which they wish to
pursue their studies, but this is often conditional upon the availability of
materials, equipment, and supervisors. Often a student is advised to consult
with the head of department or the associate dean (graduate studies) in
relation to their final choice of area.
Students considering undertaking this course are requested to apply in writing
to the associate dean (graduate studies) in the year prior to their proposed
commencement of studies. Studies for the MPharmSc degree normally commence in
March of each year, and continue for at least another two years (four
semesters).
Scholarships from both the university and the college are available to support
MPharmSc candidates during their studies, however, competition for such
scholarships is intense and no guarantee can be given that scholarship support
will be forthcoming. The awards provide a scholarship of approximately $15,000
gross per annum.
