The Professional Development Institute is a self-funding unit within the
Faculty of Education. It provides a range of adult education programs for
various professional and occupational groups and the wider community.
With an ability to draw upon the resources of the Faculty, the Institute has
the capacity to coordinate and facilitate a range of professional development
programs for primary, secondary and early childhood teachers, as well as for
those working, or wishing to work in a support role with children. It is also
able to assist principals and their administration teams with their strategic
planning and review of school programs.
The Institute represents the interests of the faculty to various key government
and non-government organisations regarding professional development and
vocational training, in particular the Victorian Directorate of School
Education, the Catholic Education Office of Victoria, the Office of Training
and Further Education, the State Training Board, other state and federal
government bodies as well as various professional associations and community
groups.
The Institute has three directors: Associate Professor Tony Taylor, Dr Brenton
Doecke and Mr Michael Kupsch. It is located principally at the Peninsula campus
(PO Box 527, Frankston, Vic. 3199; telephone (03) 9904 4240) and also
has offices at the Clayton and Gippsland campuses.
The operation of the Institute essentially entails the following elements: the
conduct of feasibility studies to ascertain the potential for a course,
including the commissioning of expert course developers; course development;
the application for accreditation of the course by the Faculty; promotion of
the course; course delivery; evaluation.
