Aims

On completion its participants will be able to:

• critically examine and understand the theoretical concepts of psychoanalytic and developmental theory and their application to the understanding of disturbed children and adolescents;
• demonstrate a capacity to integrate this knowledge and understanding of psychoanalytic and developmental theory;
• apply this knowledge and understanding of psychoanalytic and developmental theory to clinical material;
• have culturally responsive skills in reflection on and recording of observations of infants, children and adolescents in both clinical and naturalistic settings;
• have a capacity to process and use their own experiences and observations of infants, children, adolescents and parents and organise them in a written form;
• identify areas of further development in regard to practical skills or research interests that may lead to further training.

Therefore on completion of the course participants will have engaged in learning experiences that will enable them to have knowledge and understanding about:

• the major psychoanalytic theories;
• the major developmental theories from a psychodynamic perspective
• the application of these theories to developmental observation, and working with children, adolescents and parents.

Entry requirements

A medical degree, a degree in the health sciences, a degree with a psychology major or an education degree at pass level from an approved tertiary institution, or qualifications and/or experience which in the opinion of the faculty board on the advice of the advisory committee are equivalent. It would be beneficial for intending students to be working in the field with children and/or adolescents.

Special requirements

Students will be required to have access to a computer with CD-Rom and modem.

Compulsory attendance requirements on-campus

One compulsory residential school for 4-5 days each year.

Details of subjects

Assessment

The subjects of the course will be assessed at regular intervals (monthly) so that in line with distance education principles the students receive regular feedback of their progress, these assessments will count towards the final assessment at the completion of each subject. The students at each stage will be required to demonstrate an understanding and integration of the material provided in the course.
The assignments required at Grad Dip level (4th year) equivalent to 3,000 words and at Masters level (5th year) equivalent to 5,000 words.
The different components of the assessment will contribute towards the final assessment by the following amounts: regular assignments (40%), final assignment 40%), interactive assessment via the residential workshop (20%).

Credits/exemptions

Recognition of prior learning in the area will be considered for studies of equivalent standing that were completed not more than 5 years previously. Up to a maximum of 50% of the credit points would be considered.
