The Masters Qualifying in Applied Linguistics is preparatory study for the Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics. It deals with applications of linguistics to professional and social contexts in which language plays a crucial role. Present offerings are particularly suited to teachers of English as a mother tongue, as a second or foreign language, to teachers of languages other than English, to generalist primary school teachers, to language advisers, language consultants, and those concerned with multicultural and language policies. People working in the media (advertising/journalism), in business/industry as well as in the service professions (health, law, social work) would also find this course useful as some units deal with applications of linguistics relevant to the media, the workplace and the professions.
Applicants should hold at least a three year bachelors degree with a major sequence in linguistics or a major sequence inEnglish or another language, with results at least at credit standard in the third year of the major sequence.
At present, the only special requirement is that students will need access to an audio tape playback facility. However, we are increasingly moving into multimedia teaching and it is highly recommended that students acquire email accessibility.
This
course deals with the basics of 'core' and applied linguistics, by way of
preparation for the study of the applications of linguistics to professional
and social contexts which is covered in the Master of Arts program.
The program is normally undertaken in one year full-time or two years
part-time. Students will take four fourth-year level subjects. Students require
a credit average in this Masters Qualifying program to progress to the Master
of Arts in applied linguistics by coursework program.
There are no examinations in this program. All subjects consist of continuous assessment, which may include a take-home test.
Credit may be granted for comparable subjects completed elsewhere or at a previous time. Applicants holding an appropriate honours degree with a grade of H2B or above or the equivalent, may be permitted to apply for direct entrance to the Master of Arts in applied linguistics.Students who have completed relevant subjects at fourth year level may apply for a maximum of 50 per cent advanced standing. Students with a relevant faculty certificate completed at fourth year level with grades of at least credit average may obtain a maximum of 50 per cent (twenty-four points) credit towards their Masters Qualifying in Applied Linguistics. No student may obtain more than 50 per cent credit in total.
