Major studies

Advanced studies in painting, photography, sculpture and ceramics. On completion of these studies, students are expected to have developed attitudes towards their discipline which promote understanding of the artistic context of their practice; increased their understanding of the process of formulating, planning and conducting research programs relevant to their practice and discipline by individual research proposals and carrying them through with appropriate supervision; critical and analytical skills appropriate to individually formulated research topics, resulting in a research paper; verbal presentation, documentation of practice, networking and public presentation of artwork; and artwork and a research paper for critical assessment as a conclusion on the ongoing supervision processes which are essentially critical in nature.

Initial enrolment

An extensive course of professional studio practice in painting, photography, ceramics or sculpture, with emphasis on critical evaluation. Students are encouraged to revise and strengthen the assumptions and beliefs upon which their undergraduate work was based. Progress during the course is monitored by regular reports from the student to the supervisor. Further details are published in the Graduate Diploma of Arts (Visual Arts) 'Guide for distance education students' provided to all enrolled students at the commencement of each year.
The subject content is determined by a written proposal submitted by the student. Application kits are available from the Administrative Officer, Gippsland Centre for Art and Design, telephone (03) 5122 6261.

Assessment

Assessment is based on participation and on submission of studio work and written work as appropriate to the investigations carried out. Before the completion of the course, a final submission of work in a form suitable for assessment is required.
