This masters degree has been designed as an interactive field of study providing a close association with industry using applied cooperative teaching by both academics and industry practitioners. Its specialised streams in commercial banking and treasury have been developed in response to market needs. This course is targeted at professional bankers and corporate treasurers seeking to invigorate and extend their managerial and leadership capacity and effectiveness.

Course objectives

The course has been designed to:

provide a close association with industry by applied cooperative teaching by both academics and industry;
enhance and develop skills and industry knowledge to heighten participants' effectiveness in an increasingly competitive environment;
allow participants to attain an advanced conceptual understanding in the area of specialisation, complemented by practical applications that will extend and support learning and provide exposure to the contemporary issues and problems;
provide a vocational emphasis through extensive case studies, complex situational studies and simulations, exercises, project work, reading assignments and examinations with other masters candidates of equivalent talent, drive and initiative; and
provide an environment comprised of self-motivated individuals, comparable in background, level of responsibility and commitment to executive and organisational advancement.

Admission requirements

Applicants require a pass degree or equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution plus a minimum of three years relevant employment experience.

Fees

This is a fee-paying course. Candidates should consult the Department of Accounting and Finance as to the 1999 course fee. Course fees are set and reviewed annually and are therefore subject to change.

Duration

The Master of Banking is normally completed in three semesters of full-time study or five semesters of part-time study.

Mode of offering

Treasury stream classes are offered at a venue in the central business district, Melbourne, or at the Caulfield campus. Subject to enrolment numbers, the treasury stream is also offered in intensive delivery mode in Sydney and Melbourne. The commercial stream is offered on-campus at the Caulfield campus.

Credit for work done previously

Candidates may be eligible for a maximum of five credit exemptions for subjects considered to be equivalent to particular requirements in the course of study. Please refer to the course director for further details.

Professional recognition

The Master of Banking by coursework - commercial stream, is accredited by the Australian Institute of Banking and Finance and provided the required subjects are completed successfully, graduates will qualify for senior associate membership status.
The Master of Banking by coursework - treasury stream, has been designed in cooperation with the Australian Society of Corporate Treasurers. Provided the required subjects are completed successfully, graduates will also be eligible to receive the Diploma in Treasury Management from the Australian Society of Corporate Treasurers. In addition, the treasury stream has been accredited by the Australian Society of Certified Practising Accountants as a specialist course in treasury.

Core subjects

The degree offers a commercial stream or a treasury stream. Each stream is comprised of ten (equivalent) units. Electives are offered subject to an acceptable number of approved enrolments.
