The course involves four years of full-time study or the equivalent in part-time or distance education.

Course objectives

On completion of the course, students will:

have a sound knowledge and understanding of business principles and practice;
be qualified to work at a professional level in a scientifically oriented environment in which modern business techniques are required, or in a commercial environment in which a background in a science or information technology is desirable;
through the breadth and depth of knowledge acquired by undertaking the joint degree be able to contribute significantly to Australia's performance in developing and marketing products which reflect customer needs, the country's resources and its scientific and technological expertise.

Australia as a nation must improve its track record in developing and marketing products and services which exploit its resources and strong scientific and technological expertise. This will require more graduates with the breadth of skills offered by the new combined degree.

Admission requirements

The basic requirement for entry to the course is satisfactory completion of an upper secondary school program equivalent to the Victorian Certificate of Education. Applicants will be expected to have a grade average of C in English, Specialist Mathematics or Mathematical Methods, and a grade average of C in one of Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Psychology. Some studies in business-related areas are helpful but not essential.
Students who have completed the first year of the normal Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Business at the Gippsland campus with good academic results may be admitted to the second year of the double degree with full credit for appropriate first-year studies.
Mature-age applicants are assessed on the basis of their employment and overall educational background and career objectives.

Course structure

The Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Business is normally taken over four years of full-time study or the equivalent in part-time or distance education study. Students are required to complete a minimum of 192 credit points, meeting the following requirements.
(a) Completion of the following core business subjects with a total credit value of forty-two credit points (seven subjects):

AFG1001 Introductory accounting A
ECG1101 Introduction to economics
BTG1201 Introduction to business law
MGG1302 Management theory and functions
MKG1401 Introduction to marketing
ETX1642 Business mathematics and statistics: sequence 2
GCO1851 Computing systems and applications

(b) Completion of the following two subjects covering information transfer and problem-solving in science and interdisciplinary perspectives on science and technology:

SCI1010 How science works (six credit points)
SCI1020 The design of science (six credit points)

(c) Completion of a major study of at least thirty-six credit points and two submajors of at least twenty-four credit points each in any business discipline areas; or completion of two major studies of at least thirty-six credit points each in two business discipline areas. Business major and submajor studies are available in the following discipline areas:

Business majors: accounting, economics, management, marketing, tourism management;
Business submajors: all of the above business majors and law.

(d) Completion of science discipline sequences consisting of (i) a science major sequence (excluding computing) of at least forty-eight points, structured as follows:

(ii) a science minor sequence in a second discipline, consisting of twelve points at level one, and twelve points at levels two and three; and (iii) at least one level-one subject from one of the following groups:

Physical processes
Life processes
Earth processes.

This subject is to be drawn from a different group from those which include the two chosen science discipline sequences in (i) and (ii).The science discipline sequences may be chosen from applied biology, applied statistics, chemical and analytical sciences, mathematics and modelling, psychology, resource and environmental management, and computing (minor only). (e) Undertake any additional studies required to complete the minimum 192 credit points needed for the double degree.
