The
provision of elective subjects allows students to further develop their
expertise in the relevant degree or major discipline, or to develop other areas
of expertise. Students may select subjects offered by another faculty.
At Caulfield and Peninsula students can select one or more subjects from the
elective subjects listed under the heading 'Choice of elective subjects for
tagged Bachelor of Business students' or another undergraduate business
subject, or subjects from another faculty as long as prerequisites for that
subject have been satisfied. Subjects from another institution may also be
taken with the approval of the course director. Students wishing to study a
subject which is not listed as an approved subject under the course entry in
the handbook, should complete an application for a non-standard subject
enrolment and lodge the form with their relevant departmental administration
office. Students are strongly advised to discuss their proposed electives with
their course director at the completion of the first-year of their program.
At Clayton electives can be chosen from any other faculty, but may not be of
the same discipline area as the major and supporting studies chosen. For the
generalist and specialised Bachelor of Commerce courses, up to two elective
subjects of the appropriate year level can be undertaken in each year of the
course. For the Bachelor of Economics, approximately half of all subjects can
be electives from other faculties. Students may undertake a second major
specialisation, such as a language, mathematics, computing, politics, history
or sociology. Almost all subjects offered by the faculties of Arts, Science and
Computing and Information Technology are available to students.
At Gippsland a student may include up to six semester-length subjects offered
at degree level by other faculties of the university, provided they are of
equivalent academic standing.
At Berwick, where all courses are either double degree or double award courses,
there is little room in the structure of these courses for elective subjects.
Some Bachelor of Business programs allow students to take two elective subjects
which must be selected from approved subjects offered by the Faculty of
Business and Economics. Bachelor of Tourism programs do not include any
elective subjects.
At Monash Sunway students may select elective subjects from those offered by
the faculty or subjects from another faculty, or from other approved
institutions, as long as the prerequisites for those subjects have been
satisfied.
Candidates for graduate courses are referred to the individual course entries in this handbook for details of course structure and elective subjects.
Normally
the ENTER score and/or satisfaction of the mathematics requirement will
determine whether students from other faculties are admitted to subjects
offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics.
Students are not normally permitted to enrol in subjects with the following
prefixes without the mathematics prerequisite (or equivalent) of the faculty's
undergraduate courses on the relevant campus, but exceptions may be considered
on a case-by-case basis by the head of department or nominee. AFC, ETC, some
ECC2/3 subjects at Clayton need VCE mathematical methods (units 3 and 4); ETF,
ETX, AFF, AFX subjects at Caulfield/Peninsula need any VCE mathematics (units 3
and 4); AFG subjects at Gippsland need any VCE mathematics (units 1 and 2).
Normally students will be admitted to subjects with the following prefixes only
if they have an ENTER score (or equivalent) not less than the minimum permitted
for faculty enrolled students in faculty undergraduate courses on that
particular campus: AFF, AFX, ETF, ETX subjects at Caulfield/Peninsula; AFC, ETC
subjects at Clayton; AFG subjects at Gippsland. Any exceptions will be
considered on a case-by-case basis by the head of department or nominee.
Students should contact the department offering the subject for further information. Students must meet the prerequisites to be eligible to enrol in a subject.
