Director of first-year studies: Dr David Mills
Subjects: PHS1011, PHS1022, PHS1031, PHS1042
Two physics sequences are offered in first year. Students whose interests are in physics, chemistry, mathematics, astronomy, computing, or related disciplines, are advised to take the subject pair PHS1011 and PHS1022. This sequence explores the underlying nature of the world, and uses a mathematical approach. The sequence PHS1031 and PHS1042 (Physics for biosciences), is designed for students who intend to continue in physiology, biochemistry, biomedical and environmental disciplines. This sequence offers a more descriptive approach emphasising physical processes, measurement and instrumentation methods relevant to biological applications.
A knowledge of VCE physics is assumed for both sequences. Students with no VCE physics, or a weaker background in mathematics and physics, are advised to take the PHS1031/PHS1042 sequence. Both PHS1011 and PHS1022 are normally required to enter the second-year physics subjects PHS2011 and PHS2022, and the second year applied physics subjects PHS2311 and PHS2322, however students with exceptionally good results in PHS1031 and PHS1042 may be enrolled at the discretion of the head of department. Either first-year sequence provides an adequate foundation to continue to second-year studies in astronomy, materials science and image processing.
