Students of outstanding merit: faculty scholars
The faculty operates a Faculty of Science Scholar Scheme which
recognises academic excellence. This scheme is separate from the Bachelor of
Science (Science Scholar Program). Entry to the scheme is at second-year level
and is based on results obtained after the first year of study in the faculty.
Faculty scholar status is reviewed at the end of each year, and scholars are
entitled to an annual book allowance and academic support during the time they
are enrolled in their undergraduate studies. They are also given the
opportunity to pursue studies which can be tailored individually to meet their
particular interests and aspirations.
The individual study program for each scholar is determined by the faculty,
through its faculty scholar scheme coordinators, after full discussion between
the scholar and a coordinator, and any amendments to the program must be
approved by a coordinator, prior to faculty approval being given. A supervisor,
being a senior member of academic staff, is appointed for each scholar, and the
role of this supervisor is to be available to provide guidance, academic
support and encouragement.
The study program for an individual scholar is designed to offer a wider and/or
deeper study experience than that afforded by the standard course. Faculty
scholars may take additional subjects above the normal requirement which are
chosen on the basis of individual interest. These subjects are not `weighted',
ie they attract no HECS liability, but are accorded their full credit points.
