Physiology

Suitably qualified graduates may enrol either for the MSc or PhD degree, for which a research project is to be undertaken. Research topics at present being studied in the department include ion transport in red blood cells; brain ultrastructure and function; the physiology of sense organs and their central pathways; autonomic nerve mechanisms; physiology of central and peripheral synapses and the innervation of visceral and vascular smooth muscle; energetics and mechanics of smooth, cardiac and skeletal muscles; computer simulation; neurophysiology of the cerebellum; endocrine control, particularly by steroid hormones, and mechanisms of corticosteroid synthesis; endocrinology of opioids and other peptides; reproduction, including ovarian function, physiology of lactation, marsupial reproductive physiology, reproductive biology of seasonally breeding mammals, fetal physiology including development of respiratory control mechanisms, uterine motility, fetal growth factors and the endocrinology of parturition; molecular biology of aging.
