8 points * 9 hours per week * Second semester * Clayton * Prerequisites: ZOO2011 or permission of the head of the department
This subject is intended to follow on from ZOO2011 and consists of two compulsory units. The first unit `Animal function and behaviour' (comprising two lectures and one five-hour practical per week) examines the comparative structure and function of invertebrate and vertebrate animals, particularly in relation to their behaviour. There is an optional one-week excursion to the Great Barrier Reef at the end of semester as an introduction to marine biology. The second unit (comprising two lectures per week) introduces evolutionary theory and comparative biochemistry. This latter unit is also taken by students enrolled in BOT2022. Students enrolled in both BOT2022 and ZOO2022 will undertake collateral studies of approximately two hours per week to compensate for the fact that material in the second unit is common to both subjects.
