This subject consists of two compulsory units. The first unit `Animal diversity' (comprising two lectures and one five-hour practical per week) examines the diversity of invertebrate and vertebrate animals from a phylogenetic and ecological point of view. There are two optional field excursions: the first, for five days, is held immediately before the start of first semester and introduces field techniques in zoology; the second, for a weekend, is held during semester as an introduction to methods in marine biology. The second unit (comprising two lectures per week) introduces systematics and ecological principles and methods. This latter unit is also taken by students enrolled in BOT2011. Students enrolled in both BOT2011 and ZOO2011 will undertake collateral studies of approximately two hours per week to compensate for the fact that material in the second unit is common to both subjects.
