Microbiology

First/Second semester * Clayton * Prerequisites: MIC3011 and MIC3022

This subject allows students to complete the requirements for the award of a Bachelor of Science degree with honours in microbiology. The normal prerequisite for enrolment is a credit in each of the third-year microbiology subjects. The subject involves a combination of coursework and laboratory research and allows students to specialise in biotechnology, molecular genetics, medical microbiology, microbial physiology, molecular virology or cellular and molecular parasitology. There will be an opportunity to obtain an honours degree in medical informatics aspects of microbiology. The coursework involves colloquia that examine selected topics at an advanced level, attendance and participation in seminars, and the completion of appropriate written reports. The research component of the subject involves a research project carried out under the supervision of an academic staff member. The objectives of the project will be to give the student training in the planning and conduct of scientific research, the critical evaluation of experimental data, and the oral and written presentation of the results and conclusions. Information about the assessment of the subject will be given to students on commencement.
