Dr Harley Dean

8 points * 9 hours per week - 4 x 1-hour lectures, 5 hours practical * First semester * Clayton * Prerequisites: CHM1011 and CHM1022, or BIO1011 and BIO1022 with VCE Chemistry. First-year chemistry is strongly recommended

The first-semester subject introduces the student to bacteria and fungi and to the experimental methods used in their study. It aims to provide an understanding of their nature and life including aspects such as their structure, physiology, genetics, growth, control, diversity and relationships. A basis for molecular microbiology and recombinant DNA technology is provided to allow students to expand their studies in these areas and in biotechnology in third year microbiology.
