Quantitative seismology

Basic theorems in dynamic elasticity. Elastic waves from a point source. Helmholtz equation. Green Function. Representation of seismic source. Radiation patterns. Reflection and transmission of plane waves/spherical waves. Surface waves and vertical structure. Free oscillations of the Earth. Body waves in media with depth-dependent properties. Ray theory. Theoretical seismograms. Tomographic inversion.

Assessment

Examinations (1.5 hours): 85% * Assignments: 15%
