Mathematics project

BS BT DT BC BP BDT

Mr Francis Benyah (Individual student projects shall be supervised by appropriate members of the Mathematical Sciences Group)

6 points * Full-year subject * 4-6 hours per week including one hour class contact and 3-5 hours individual work per week * Gippsland/Distance * Prerequisites: GAS2062 or GAS2064, and students will be required to have completed the first and second levels of their course before enrolling in this subject. Note: this subject is to be taken by all Bachelor of Applied Science students majoring in mathematics only.

Students are encouraged to develop skills in research work, will gain experience in applying mathematics to a practical problem and will pursue theoretical studies directed towards that end. The themes of GAS1062 and GAS2062, with foundations in mathematics subjects, are brought together in the form of an individual research project. Requirements to be met include reviewing relevant literature, seminar presentation and participation, and submission of a detailed final report. Where necessary for a particular project, attendance at short seminar programs may also be required. Students must maintain regular contact with their project supervisor(s). On-campus and distance students undertake supervised individual project work with occasional seminars and tutorials.

Assessment

Initial presentation: 5% * Interim seminar report: 20% * Final written project report: 75%

Recommended reading

A reading program initially designed by the supervisor with the student is then further supplemented by the student's own literature search.
