Subject value of 1.0 (6 point) * Second semester * One 2-hour lecture and one 3-hour laboratory per week * Gippsland/Distance * Prerequisites: GAS2504 plus two subjects from GAS2501, GAS2502 and GAS2503, or equivalent second-level subjects

This subject focuses on the study of higher mental processes. It aims to provide students with a firm foundation of theory and research in the study of the human mind. Substantial fundamental issues of cognitive psychology will be included in lectures, such as pattern recognition, attention, memory, imagery, language comprehension and production, reading, problem solving, creativity, reasoning, and decision making. Laboratory classes will build on this theoretical background in an attempt to isolate specific mechanisms underlying performance in cognitive tasks. Laboratory sessions will also be used to illustrate important experiments in cognition and to clarify central concepts in a practical manner. You will use your cognitive processes to learn about them and their relevance to everyday, real-world experiences. Distance education students are required to attend a two-day weekend or residential school program.

Assessment

Laboratory reports: 40% * Examination: 60% * A pass on the examination is required for successful completion of this subject
