6 points * Second semester * 3 hours of lectures and 3 hours of tutorial/laboratory work per week * Gippsland/Distance * Prerequisites: GAS1383 or permission of the subject adviser
This subject is designed to introduce and further develop topics relevant to physics and physical sciences for students who wish to study physics as a major discipline or adjunct to other science studies. Topics covered include an introduction to relativity; wave theory and physical optics; thermal and electrical properties of materials; circuit theory; applied mechanics and hydrodynamics; the properties of real gases; and a study of electrical conduction in the gaseous, liquid and solid states. Detailed study guides are provided, with a number of assignments and practice problems. Tutorial and practical classes take place for Gippsland students on a regular time-tabled basis. Laboratory exercises are designed to achieve two objectives: (i) to demonstrate and reinforce theory material; and (ii) to develop an appreciation of measurement skills and methods of analysis.
Assessment
End-of-semester examination: 70% * Laboratory work (reports): 30% * Students must pass both theory and laboratory sections
