Chemistry

Associate Professor David Hewitt

6 points * Three 1-hour lectures and one 3-hour laboratory or tutorial per week * First semester * Clayton

Passes in both CHM1011 and CHM1022 are required for entry to second year. A knowledge of VCE Chemistry is assumed. Students with a deficient background will find the subject difficult and must consult a Department of Chemistry adviser before enrolment. Topics include structure of matter; atomic structure; stereochemistry of inorganic compounds; the periodic classification and some selected topics of descriptive inorganic chemistry; introduction to the quantitative behaviour of chemical systems including stoichiometry (VCE), rates of reaction, phase equilibrium, chemical equilibrium, electrochemistry; introduction to aliphatic organic chemistry and stereochemistry and organic spectroscopy (IR, NMR and MS). The laboratory work is designed to teach experimental techniques and to demonstrate the application of basic chemical concepts. There will be regular tutorials and computer assisted learning and assessment.

Assessment

Examinations (2 x 2 hours): 70% * Laboratory work: 20% * Computer tests: 10%
