Analysis and modelling of mass transfer processes. Isothermal two-phase systems, mass transfer, mass transfer coefficients. Principles of equilibrium stages with applications in liquid-liquid extraction. Analysis and modelling of heat transfer processes. Heat transfer in batch mixing, jacketed and coiled vessels. Heat transfer coefficients. Concentric-pipe and shell-and-tube heat exchangers. Conduction and convection processes. Use of fins. Boiling and condensation. Fluid statics. Conservation of linear momentum. Flow through pipes; friction factor, Reynold's number, laminar and turbulent flow, velocity profiles. Particle drag. Pumping of fluids, pump characteristics, efficiencies, interaction of pump and system characteristics.
