Steady state mass balances for non-reactive and reactive systems with recycle, bypass and purge streams. Energy balance calculations for non-reactive and reactive systems. Single and multiphase systems, phase diagrams, humidity and vapour pressure. Computer-aided mass balance calculations. Combined mass and energy balance calculations. Analysis and modelling of simple steady and unsteady state systems applying the conservation principles and constitutive equations. Dimensional analysis. Steady and unsteady behaviour of isothermal, non-reacting liquid systems. Isothermal reacting liquid systems, reaction kinetics. Analysis and design of batch, semi-batch, continuous flow stirred tank and tubular flow reactors. Thermodynamics, first and second laws. Energy conservation applied to thermal systems. Entropy changes and reversibility. Cycles of processes using perfect gas or vapour.

Examinations: 85% * Laboratory work: 15%
