This subject consist of two compulsory units. The first unit `Evolution of plant diversity' (comprising two lectures and one five-hour practical session per week) surveys the biology of diverse plant groups including fungi, algae, ferns, bryophytes, gymnosperms and angiosperms. The practical component of the unit includes a one-week field excursion in the inter-semester break to study native plant communities in the Grampians or at Wilsons Promontory. The second unit (comprising two lectures per week) introduces evolutionary theory and comparative biochemistry. This latter unit is also taken by students enrolled in Zoology 2022. Students enrolled in both Botany 2022 and Zoology 2022 will undertake collateral studies of approximately two hours per week to compensate for the fact that material in the second unit is common to both subjects.
