Dr John Beardall

8 points * First semester * Clayton * Prerequisites: BIO1011 and BIO1022 or permission of the head of the department

This subject consists of two compulsory units. The first unit, `Structure and function of plants: from cells to organism' (comprising two lectures and one five-hour practical per week) deals with the structure of plant organelles, cells and tissues with particular regard to their physiological function and the acquisition of materials required by the plant for growth. Special emphasis is placed on adaptations of Australian plants, and the unit also considers the ecology of soils. The second unit (comprising two lectures per week) introduces systematics and ecological principles and methods. This latter unit is also taken by students enrolled in Zoology 2011. Students enrolled in both Botany 2011 and Zoology 2011 will undertake collateral studies of approximately two hours per week to compensate for the fact that material in the second unit is common to both subjects.
