Foundations of primary health care nursing

4 hours per week * First semester * Peninsula

This subject introduces the philosophy, concepts, frameworks and competencies required for primary health care nursing practice. The subject is organised around four themes. (1) Models of health and primary health care: models and concepts of health; philosophy and principles of primary health care nursing; ecological, cross cultural and global health perspective. (2) Community care: the meanings of community care; nurse advocacy and empowerment; community needs assessment; environmental assessment; family assessment and care; caring for the caregiver. (3) Developing interpersonal skills: counselling skills; intentional interviewing. (4) Professional issues: stress, conflict and burnout; effective time management; networking; working in multidisciplinary teams.

Assessment

Assignment: 40% * Practical work: 30% * Seminar work: 30%
