Contemporary studies in rehabilitation and extended care nursing

This subject explores the evolution of nursing knowledge within a scientific and professional context. This will involve the introduction of contemporary nursing philosophies, models and theories, and the concepts involved in a more professional model of nursing practice. Topics covered in this subject include introduction to the universe of nursing and the effects of changing social context of nursing; conceptualisation in nursing and the movement toward the establishment of a nursing discipline; analysis of the four major elements for a nursing model; nursing knowledge and the development of nursing theory; use of criteria in judgement; toward a professional model of practice; roles in nursing; quality assurance; patterns of practice - the advantages and disadvantages; and the question of advocacy and participation in nursing and the question of rights.
