Drug and alcohol nursing

The subject will introduce students to a comprehensive approach in drug and alcohol nursing perspectives; show how to assess clients, predict drug withdrawal syndrome(s) and manage drug withdrawal syndrome(s) in a variety of psychiatric health care settings; and introduce the principles of drug and alcohol counselling. Content for the subject will include attitude exploration, models of drug use, current terminology, epidemiology of drug use, political issues, nursing management and education of the drug-withdrawing client, drug programs in Victoria, introduction to counselling strategies, help for the helper.
