This is an experientially based subject designed to assist the student to develop skills in individual counselling and group work. Topics include the nurse's awareness of self, values, attitudes, beliefs, prejudices; phases of the therapeutic relationship; therapeutic communication measures; purposes and functions of groups; types of groups; group processes and dynamics of group leadership; phases of group work; ethnic factors in group processes; managing group conflict; analysing and evaluating; ethical and legal issues; counselling models; principles of effective counselling.
