Human bioscience II

5 points * 4 hours per week * Second semester * Peninsula

Homeostasis and feedback mechanisms. Nervous system structure. Cardiac function, blood flow, blood pressure and pulse. Alterations in cardiac function, hypertension, hypotension and haemostasis. Organisation of the respiratory system. Gas exchange and blood gas maintenance. Pulmonary disorders. Kidney structure and function, renal failure, action of diuretics. Regulation of interstitial and body fluids, electrolytes and pH. Water and electrolyte disorders, oedema. Urinary system structure, function and disorders. The subject is taught by lectures, demonstrations and laboratory work.

Assessment

Laboratory assessment: 30% * Examination (2 hours): 70% * Students must achieve a satisfactory level in both areas of assessment to obtain a pass in the subject
