Clinical research in the areas of preventive medicine (especially preventive cardiology and cardiovascular epidemiology), occupational and environmental toxicology, drug epidemiology, health services research, respiratory disease epidemiology and infectious disease epidemiology. Specific projects include the following: Studies of the genetics and molecular biology of coronary artery disease. Clinical trials in isolated systolic hypertension. Stroke epidemiology prevention. Assessment of 24-hour BP monitoring. Epidemiology of peripheral vascular disease. Clinical trials with new antihypertensive drugs. Case control study of intracerebral haemorrhage. Assessment of drugs to assist smoking cessation (nicotine, clonidine). Prediction of resources required for chronic dialysis. Predicting cost of various strategies for the management of hypertension and hyperlipidaemia. Reassessment of the acceptable daily intake of organophosphate insecticides in humans. Phosphine exposure in grain workers. Determination of origin of high organochlorine levels in breast milk. Measurements of cadmium concentration in human kidney tissues. Prevention of vascular disease with aspirin and antioxidants. Validation of a questionnaire to determine past exposure to low frequency radiation. Ambient environmental factors and health service utilisation by asthmatics. International (EC) study of prevalence and risk factors for asthma. Human papillomavirus in renal transplant recipients. Effect of oral beta-carotene on human papillomavirus infection. Early discharge in birthcentres. Cost effectiveness of recombinant products. Risk factors for drug induced jaundice. Validity of carotid duplex scanning as a measure of atheroma. Predictive values of haematuria in the elderly. Sibpair study of the inheritance of asthma. Evaluation of asthma education.
