Obstetrics and gynaecology
This nine-week program aims to equip students (1) to cope with resident training should they wish to become specialists in obstetrics and gynaecology or a general practitioner-obstetrician and (2) to counsel patients with common gynaecological problems without further resident training. All students spend the first week at the Monash Medical Centre (Clayton) where phased instruction in undergraduate aspects of obstetrics and gynaecology is provided. Specific practical introductions to vaginal examinations are included. Practical clinical instruction in obstetrics and gynaecology is provided during the next seven weeks via student attachments to one of the following hospitals: Box Hill, Mornington Peninsula, Dandenong and Monash Medical Centre (Moorabbin) and Monash Medical Centre (Clayton) (which also rosters students for clinical tuition purposes to the Alfred, Angliss, Ferntree Gully and Mordialloc-Cheltenham community hospitals). The final week is devoted to revision, student examinations and subject feedback and evaluation. The syllabus emphasises fundamental reproductive physiology, human sexuality, family planning, normal pregnancy and parturition, psychological and social aspects of obstetrics and gynaecology and the recognition of common abnormalities of pregnancy and diseases of women. Students may obtain an obstetrics and gynaecology teaching supplement prepared by the staff of the department when commencing their program. This supplement is regularly revised. The department conducts a wide range of research into reproductive endocrinology. Students with an interest in pursuing such research are invited to discuss with staff members the possibility of either elective programs or Bachelor of Medical Science programs. Students may select one or more of the following books according to their own preference. Latest editions are preferred.
