Principles and practice of public health

1 hour 45 minutes per week over 14 weeks * Second semester

The basic concepts and principles of public health and their implementation are the central content of this subject. Following an historical perspective on public health in its social, political and scientific context, the contributions of the various disciplines to public health will be examined stressing its complex multidisciplinary nature. Policies and programs in public health including occupational health in contemporary Australia will be examined and compared with overseas developments and the roles of different agents in the health of the public will be reviewed.

Assessment

Essay: 2500 words * Students are expected to read two to three assigned articles per week and be prepared to discuss them. * Students will conduct three interviews with public health practitioners and write up the interviews
