Health promotion and illness prevention

1 hour 45 minutes per week over 14 weeks * First semester

This subject provides an introduction to the theory and practice of health promotion. It begins with consideration of the nature of health promotion and the prospects for preventing ill health. The old and new public health will be presented, stressing the contributions to problem solving of different public sectors and professional and community groups. Some major conceptual models for health promotion, including both behavioural and social approaches will be reviewed and related to health promotion strategies from the individual to the population levels. The principles and applications of evaluation will be surveyed. There will be an emphasis on actual examples of health promotion problem-posing and problem solving.

Assessment

Assignment: 2000 words * Informed participation in class discussion (based on readings) * Several short class exercises
