Practice of surgery and internal medicine
The main emphasis of the program is on bedside teaching. Groups of six to eight students are allocated to have both general medical and surgical as well as specialty tutorials. These consist of three to four hours of teaching per week (two sessions) spread across the three terms. All groups will have a principal tutor for one session per week during two of the three terms. During the third term, each group will be instructed by a tutor from the discipline other than that of their principal tutor. Specialty tutorials take place with each group rotating through each group of the specialties for one to two weeks at a time.The aims of the bedside teaching are to develop student's skills in (i) communication and relating to patients; (ii) conducting a patient interview; (iii) obtaining appropriate clinical information from patients and other individuals; and (iv) organising and utilising clinical information in a problem-oriented manner.
