Infectious diseases and medical genetics and clinical molecular biology

Infectious diseases

Associate Professor J K Davies (Microbiology)

This component is planned to give the student a thorough understanding of the processes of infectious diseases. It will build upon the information already given in MED2052 (Tissue injury, neoplasia and inflammation and infection and immunity) and will serve as a basis for the integrative teaching in fourth year, and the speciality teaching in fifth and sixth year. The lecture series will illustrate the processes and the organisms involved in infectious disease, the response of the individual to these processes and the role of infections in the community. It will aim to equip the student with the necessary skills and knowledge to begin the diagnosis of infection. This will be amplified by the practical work which, when completed, will enable students to carry out the basic procedures that are recommended for diagnosis of infections in general. At a community level, students will examine the ways in which infectious diseases are spread, their impact upon the community and methods that are used in the control of such diseases.

Assessment

Written examination (2 hours): 100%

Medical genetics and clinical molecular biology

Dr D K Bowden (Anatomy)

This component aims to integrate the relevant scientific and clinical teaching in genetics and molecular biology from the previous years of the course. Students will be introduced to the basic principles of modern medical genetics and the way these principles are applied to the clinical situation so as to prepare students for effective clinical practice. Students will apply the knowledge, skills and attitudes developed to selected problems and conditions in a way which demonstrates competence in applying scientifically-based material to a range of clinical problems. Topics covered will include the molecular basis of inherited disease, the application of DNA technology to clinical medicine, genetic disorders, cytogenetics and genetic counselling. Forensic application, genetic counselling and social and ethical issues will be dealt with by small group teaching. A practical session on karyotyping will be undertaken.

Assessment

Examination (multiple-choice and short-answer) 1 hour: 100%
