Options

Students will be provided with an opportunity to pursue areas of interest either to broaden or deepen their knowledge and skills in selected areas. All students must be involved in an option study which will be available from departments, centres or institutes of the Faculty of Medicine.

reg. Third year

First semester

The first semester of third year will introduce the study of integrated systems in endocrinology, human sexuality and reproduction, and head and neck and neurosciences, together with a continuation of clinical and communication skills that began in first year.

Second semester

The aims of second semester are to commence the application of the basic principles of the preceding years to the practice of medicine, and to introduce students to hospital practice. Subjects in this semester will cover infectious diseases, medical genetics and clinical molecular biology, basic and clinical pharmacology and toxicology and health promotion. Bedside teaching in a hospital setting is an important component of clinical and communication skills. Students also undertake an optional study during second semester.

Teaching methods

The subjects studied in third year offer a variety of teaching methods including lectures, correlation sessions, videos, bedside teaching and other practical classes.

Assessment

As well as end-of-semester examinations in various subjects, a large number of coursework components is assessed throughout the year. These coursework components include a combination of integrative case-history studies, family case-study reports, tutorial assessment, assignment work, and the clinical and communication skills workbook. The end-of-semester examinations may consist of multiple-choice questions, short-answer questions, longer essay-style questions, problem-solving tasks and a viva voce exam.
